Review : Blackest Night : Titans has been one of the most exciting "Blackest Night" spin-off story. Doves learns of her role in this battle with the Black Lanterns, and I must say, I didn't expect it. I also didn't expect what was waiting for me as I turned the page. A master stroke in this story, delivered outside the main action. Benes' art is just about as good as it has ever been in this issue. While Benes still manages to find ways to play up the sexuality of the females, he also manages to tone it down in some areas, choosing to focus on Titans and action rather than the other "T&A". That does not mean there has not been T&A , we are "treated" to about 20 shots over the 3 books.
The star here Is writer J.T Krul , He "gets" the characters, especially in the situations "Blackest Night" drops on them. I really enjoyed his take and I would like to see him write The Titans or The Teen Titans. DC would do themselves a great favor if they made Krul an offer and gave him a chance to write a regular Titans title. It'd be enough for me to check it out
There are some complains though, especially seen in The First Issue, The issue is bogged down and far too
concerned with the franchise's convoluted continuity, to the point where it has to stumble all over itself just to explain who's currently on the team, who's dead, who's back from the dead, and why. Both the art and the story combine to over-sexualize the (mostly) teenage characters to creepy levels.
Deaths are a plenty and there are tiny hints of something bigger happening and where Dove might end up playing a positive role. This Mini as not as enjoyable for me as The Batman tie in was but am sure that at the end of the day, Titans might end up playing a side role into the ways to take the Black Lanterns out. I do not think this series is essential to read as I am sure Geoff will tie whatever he wants in his story and explain in the main series itself. There is a lot of action and good writing makes this a fun story seeing Team-ups facing The Darkness........
Story : 8.8
Art : 8.2
Die ! Die ! Die !
